For this recipe, I use a standard pie dish, but you could use a larger pyrex (15×10) and then just double the recipe.
What I love about this one is that it’s semi premade – you don’t have to use a homemade cake/pie mix and all of the ingredients are just common things you can buy at your local grocery store. Nothing fancy, but your friends and family will be impressed!! The topping is optional and is probably the most ‘homemade’ part about it.
I also love the fall feelings in this easy dessert!! It would make a great addition to your holiday/Thanksgiving gathering too!
Ingredients:
1/2 yellow cake mix (just the mix, not the other ingredients on the box)
20 oz can of apple pie filling
6 tbsp unsalted butter (divided)
Cinnamon
2 tbsp sugar
2 apples sliced (any type is fine! I really like red lady apples but whatever you might have on hand or prefer works)
Directions
To start, grease your baking dish and preheat your oven to 350. Add in the whole can of the apple pie filling, and spread it evenly.
Next, layer the dry cake mix (you’re only using HALF of the package for a pie dish about this size above) and spread evenly. Add 4 tbsp of butter to the top – I advice slicing the butter more thin so that you’re able to cover more of the top of packaged mix.
Add a couple dashes of cinnamon to the top after butter is spread out. I just eyeball it!
Bake for 40 minutes. While your pie is baking, start making the topping. This part is totally optional but adds a special aspect to this pie!!!
Over medium heat, add your sliced apples and 2 tbsp of butter, 2 tbsp of sugar, and a few dashes of cinnamon to a skillet.
Cook for about 5-10 minutes until apples are soft and a glaze has formed.
When your pie comes out of the oven and your apples are done, arrange them on top of the pie in a circular figure and drizzle the juice/glaze from the skillet to the top of the pie. Place pie back in your 350 oven for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
Serve with vanilla bean ice cream or whipped cream! SO GOOD!! Tag me if you try it!
