Disney's in the Desert

Family Room Refresh

October 15, 2022

OOOOOOH my gosh! The time has finally come. C and I literally started this project right before October 1, 2021 last year (he was less than enthused haha but he knew we needed to rearrange some things to liven up the room). Let me start from the beginning while trying to keep it somewhat brief.

For those of you who are new or don’t know, C and I have been together for almost 17 years. We moved in together “officially” in between year 3 and 4. Before that, I was in college and living at home, and him on his own in a bachelor pad type situation. We started accumulating “our” furniture around that time, which was found via liquidation warehouses, surfing Craig’s List, taking hand me downs from my mom’s boss (which we were so grateful for), and building some things on our own to fill in the gaps. When we bought our house in 2014, we still didn’t have the means to splurge on furniture but our family was growing and we needed some sturdier, well made pieces. We still went the discount route (which to this day, I’m a big advocate of over buying brand-brand-new), but again, it wasn’t really our desired taste.

Last year we saved up and embarked on fixing up this room to make it lighter and brighter. We weren’t fully ready to make a big purchase on a new couch, coffee table, and the like, so we made do with what we had. C painted the coffee table that he hand crafted 6 years earlier, that was a dark stain, to white and gray to match our kitchen (which is right off of our family room). We added this wallpaper – which was very inexpensive, and I used the money I had saved up from my business to buy the media console. We sold our entertainment center (which was passed down from my mom) because the wood was really making the room so much darker, and we wanted to free up the wall space. The console is short in height but doesn’t take up a lot of walking room which has been great with a lot of people in this space now. It has sliding doors on it and about 8 different shelves where we can store board games, extra coffee table books, and even diapers!!!! It might be one of my fave pieces in the room!

We continued to work on this room on weekends, which are busy with 4 kids, so it was just kind of here and there before a soccer or basketball game which also made this project take that much more time. One day in December, C surprised me and had our 75″ Frame TV delivered – I was totally NOT expecting this. We’ve never had a TV this nice OR big before – ever – as it was a really big purchase. This would bring us together more as a family to gather when we have movie nights so we justified the expense. We hung it before Christmas and I’ll never forget last holiday season enjoying our fave holiday movies and drinking hot chocolate.

C built these beautiful natural floating shelves. I’ve seen similar at Target and World Market but to buy 6 of them would’ve been a hefty buy. Wood is obviously not cheap in this pandemic, but we were able to save a little bit by making these ourselves. I was beyond excited to be able to style and decorate these beauties – I always imagined us having them one day, so it was definitely a pinch me moment when it came. Many of the wood frames on these shelves are the same ones I’m always sharing about – they are so clean looking and really classic. They truly go in any room!

We switched out our dark ceiling fan for this more modern one, and hung these 16×20 poster frames of our kids on a trip to Flagstaff last summer. C used his iPhone 12 to capture these shots and it blows me away how good they came out. I LOVE having these in our main fam room now, too. We also ended up painting the window coverings that C made back in 2015 – they were a dark stain as well and now the room looks so much lighter with this change as well.

This project kind of stalled out and we thought we were done for months on end – I thought I might get this post up over the spring or even summer, but there was kind of one more thing I hoped we’d be able to do when the time was right. Our couch was about 7 years old as we got it around the time we were having Cole, and while it was still in decent shape, it really didn’t fit our family of 6 now. It was also a deep chocolate brown, and the whole vibe of the room had really shifted to a bright and airy look.

We also had originally a cream colored rug in this room, and I wanted to stay in that genre since pure white is hard with kids. Here’s my tip: don’t be afraid of light colored rugs! I tend to avoid 100% white but go with creams, beiges, and rugs with patterns or designs. Dirt and spots will happen, but patterns help hide things so that you don’t have to compromise on a lighter color! I found this one that I felt complimented the throw pillows and wallpaper.

Wall Hanging

On a whim one weekend in August, we ventured out to our fave discount furniture store here (AFW) and looked around. We saw one that was definitely large enough to fit us all, but wanted to check a few more stores. The sales associate there asked if we were going to go to Living Spaces, and it wasn’t even on our radar. We decided to pop in – I always had this thought in my mind that it was super overpriced. Well, I was wrong! They do have lots of home designer brands in there, but the price points are not outrageous at all. Right when we walked in, we immediately gravitated toward the first couch right in front of us – it was this large, stone colored sectional. We all melted into it and C was like, ‘we should get this if we can fit it!’ We did some measurements and we were so pleased to learn that pretty much everything on their show room floor they have in stock and able to deliver within 2 days. We were pretty much sold at that point and so excited to have this in our main living space!

In order to accommodate such a larger couch than what we had before, we had to sell our electric fireplace (sad moment, this was found on sale at Big Lots by me about 7 years ago, and we DIY’d it and gave it a little love even more recently by adding a natural mantle to the front of it) and either sell or move our coffee table C had built that we just fixed up as well. I knew I couldn’t part with the table as this piece is really sentimental to me – so we moved it to our loft and sold the previous coffee table (which was the cool one with the lift up top!) we had in there on FB marketplace. I didn’t want to part with that one either, but I could not let go of this handmade table and it actually totally fits our loft space even better than the one before. I also sold the fireplace which was hard to do, but we had absolutely no room for it so it had to go.

Custom Sign

The couch now goes along that wall where our fireplace was, and I added this mirror and another floating shelf that I actually purchased from Etsy. C could’ve totally built another one like the ones we have on the adjacent wall, however, he is so busy and pressed for time. This was just a lot easier to buy and have it delivered. I wanted another personalized touch to the room, so I had this light up sign made (if you’re in the market for one, I highly recommend getting the dimmer and remote on it – makes it SO much easier to have on and not have your eyes hurt from the brightness of the light!). I added these large throw pillows in black and then these smaller tufted-esque ones to compliment them. The kids really love these pillows and getting comfy on the couch with them and a soft throw blanket when we’re all relaxing.

Throw Blanket | Bowl | Frame | Shelf | Plant

I kept a lot of our faux plants and planters that we had in the room previously. I added these lidded baskets from World Market to hide our blankets and baby toys which was a game changer.

The last thing we did was add a round drum coffee table to the room. I honestly really wanted to leave the space open, especially with Colly still only crawling, but it was hard for us to not have somewhere to set our drinks down or have a little storage space for the remotes.

Rug | Coffee Table

C and I talk about once a week how this room has really made such a difference with our family lately. Now when they get home from sports, we relax a little bit all together before going to bed, where as before we might just travel upstairs and all do our own things. This room really has brought us all so much closer, and we couldn’t be happier!

Here’s how it looks most of the time – complete with Colly’s PT/exercise items + ball pit!

What do you guys want to see next? I have our loft refresh, living room refresh, laundry room refresh, and my officespace still to share with you all!! Let me know in the comments!

Mom Hack Monday: Drawer Organizers

June 7, 2022

When it came to getting Colly’s nursery drawers organized, I had a clear vision of what I wanted folded and put inside of them to help me as a newborn mom (again!). When it came to my own bedroom drawers, well, it’s been put on the back burner one too many times. My undergarment drawer was definitely tidy, but everything just got underneath one another.

I ran across this set of 4 drawer dividers knew it would help me accomplish my goal of cleaning up this drawer.

My dresser drawers aren’t very long length wise, so my space is pretty limited. I was able to fit 3 of these into my undergarment drawer and divided them by: bras/sports bras, underwear, and socks. The 4th divider that says its for bras/shirts/towels on the listing didn’t fit was given to my husband (I chose one that I wasn’t too sure what I’d even use it for, even if I did have the room, since I put my bras in the one labeled ‘scarf/belt’) with the longer dividers in between and now he’s using it to separate his shorts. Win!!!

The guide of suggestions of what to use this for is a good reference, but as I said above I didn’t follow it specifically since my needs are different and it worked out just fine! It’s totally subjective.

A huge, huge tip that I often share when it comes to organizing or reorganizing a space is after you take everything out (+ CLEAN the space) make 3 piles: toss, donate, and keep. It will be sooo much easier when you go to put things back in their new home!

Hope this sparks some ideas on how to clean up your undergarments (+ more!) drawer! I’ve already recommended this set to some family and friends. It’s one small step to control the chaos and state these drawers can often take shape of since we’re in them so much. Happy organizing!

Mom Monday: Honey’s Closet Makeover

May 23, 2022

Do you ever have something on your to do list that seems almost impossible to check off? For me, I’ve definitely had several of these since the pandemic started, but a big one was tackling Honey’s closet. It became a massive catch all for all of her clothes (obvi!), accessories, hair stuff, toys….the list goes on and on.

Her closet last year 😳

I actually started collecting baskets/bins/organizers in early 2020 and some of them were put to use and have been awesome, but then the clutter piled on top of it. So while *some* were functional during this time, accessing them was another story. I also bought some cheap peel and stick wallpaper for this small space to give it a little touch of style (and pink, of course!) back in 2020 too. Thankfully it was right where I left it…in the bottom of her closet 🤪

Everything I used is linked in the above graphic HERE.

Last week I finally got motivated after we came home from her preK graduation. She can’t be going into kinder in 2 months with her closet in such disarray! 🥹 I’ve talked about this before, but one of the biggest hurdles of starting any organizing project sometimes is just starting!

So, I decided to dive in! I began by clearing everything out and disinfected the shelf and dusted what was on top. I only did this to the left side (the right isn’t as bad, but could probably use a little TLC). I hung the wallpaper and lined the shelf with a similar peach colored paper and purged anything we weren’t using or was too small. TIP: It helps when you make 3 piles when going through a space that you want to reorganize: keep, toss, donate.

I also added this white frame with a cute/fitting saying for her (Sweet Like Honey), and an antler wall hook that I’ve had FOREVER that C painted blush for us to hang her necklaces from. Her other jewelry and hair accessories all went into my fave containers with lids. TIP: it helps when everything is uniform. I understand organizing products can be pricey especially if you need a bunch at once, so spacing out purchases helps. When everything you use is the same style/type, it really makes the final product SO much cleaner looking.

I keep her shoes, hats, purses + overnight bags in these canvas bins below her clothing. They’re a game changer! They come in multiple sizes and styles, which I love. I use them in our primary closet and the other kids’ closets, too. It’s easy to maintain these too since they’re not on “display” and you can toss them back in when they’re done and no one can see ☺️

I also added her fairy door (the one I used is sold out so I linked two similar ones HERE) because her room is pretty crammed. Furniture covers a lot of the wall space and there isn’t much open, so I thought having it in her closet would still be magical!

Like I said, I still have to tidy up the other side of the closet + go through some more clothes that she’s outgrown or we are saving for Colly, but I am so pleased to have this project done! She can finally use her closet the way she needs to and that makes me one happy mama!!!

Remember that maintaining is important and a major key to keeping your space/kids space organized. It takes some work on both of your parts (taking the time to put things away when they’re clean, and showing them that putting things back where we got them from is important!) but I promise, it’s so worth it!

We were able to share some of Colly’s story along with our fundraiser with @picazzositalian that’s supporting Colly’s pediatric therapy clinic, @bloomkidz_az 💚 In April, $1 of every dessert sold at all 6 stores is being donated here. We are so grateful to be able to give back to such an incredible organization that’s been monumental in Colly’s progress and unwavering in support to our family the last 2.5 years.

Thank you to @cerretanews for taking the time to chat with us and to @elainavpr for always advocating for our family so generously and in such a special way!! 🤍

Colly works so hard 🙏🏻 At age 4 and by this Colly works so hard 🙏🏻
At age 4 and by this stage of this savage disease, eating by mouth (chewing and swallowing) plus gaining (and even maintaining) weight is extremely difficult. Additionally, most girls cannot use their hands for anything with purpose at this time as well 💔

Please join us in praying that Colly will continue to have hand strength + the ability to use them, that she can tolerate eating by mouth, that she stays seizure AND med free, and that she continues to grow and gain weight. Thank you friends!!! 🫶🏻 Forever grateful for this community who encourages and cares about us.

Just received this video from Colly’s PT 2 days Just received this video from Colly’s PT 2 days ago and have already watched it on repeat about 100x 🥹 The squeal of joy is something we don’t take for granted when much of her short life has been consumed with crying, anxiety, pain, and frustration. She genuinely seems so happy and joyful 🥹😭

Also can we also just take a second to acknowledge how much motor planning and brain power it takes to repetitively jump up and down like this?! THAT’S OUR GIRL!!!!! 💪🏻🧠✨

We believe in the power of prayer and humbly ask everyone reading this to please keep praying for her. I will always desperately want more for her, and I am believing in His perfect timing that it will happen.

This is long, but worth a watch!! Colly has been a This is long, but worth a watch!! Colly has been absolutely CRUSHING Rett Syndrome this past month. Literally saying, “Rett who?!?!” 🤯🤗👊🏻 November we witnessed so many miracles happening for Colly. It wasn’t without some bumps, but we have SO much to be thankful for.

By age 3.5 (she’s so close to 4 now!), most girls with this disease no longer have purposeful use of their hands. Every day she’s able to still use them in any capacity is a miracle, but the fact that she’s doing even more beyond that…is almost unbelievable. 🥹 She is not doing what medical text says she should at this stage of the disease.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without her massive team at @bloomkidz_az where she receives 5 different therapies M-F full time, and the last couple of months adding in weekly appointments with @dr.connerbor. The impact all of these treatments are having on her is huge, and at this point, essential to her development and continued progress.

It’s so exciting to be able to post happy + encouraging updates about Colly after so much darkness, sadness, and confusion. Please pray we are able to keep her on this stable track of good health, pray for her team to have the wisdom they need to continue to help her, and pray for even more strength for her body and brain! 💪🏻🧠✨ We can’t thank you enough for cheering our family on as our sweet little girl continues the fight of her life.
The most healing Halloween + diagnosis day yet 🕊️

It’s not a secret that I still carry a heavy grief over Colly’s life. Ultimately, the prognosis of Rett is very dark but seeing her progress since she was diagnosed is nothing short of inspiring. We have so much hope for her future and although there is still much uncertainty, she has an amazing team of therapists, doctors, and supporters. She has treatment plans and goals. She has a family who loves her and will never stop pushing for more for her.

I was telling a friend recently that this day will always be a reminder of the ending of the dreams/life I saw for her, but how can I wallow in sadness when there is so much joy? Colly IS that joy ✨🪽

God has revealed a lot to me these last two years and has pulled me out of a really scary pit. He’s wiped my tears, softened my heart, and given me strength to be a better mom, caregiver, and person for Colly + my other children. Instead of dread, my excitement for life is returning and I can’t wait to see where we’ll be next Halloween 🤍

Finally sharing the small update I did earlier thi Finally sharing the small update I did earlier this year in Colly Girl’s room! I used a wall stencil from Amazon + the colors are Snowbound and Warming Peach by @sherwinwilliams for the paint 🤩

I’m personally obsessed with how it came out!! More details on my blog tonight (link in bio)! ☀️🧡🧸☁️
We are beside ourselves and elated 😭😭 If you We are beside ourselves and elated 😭😭 If you are new here, Colly had a handful of words before her second “Rett Regression” in 2023 where she lost them all and went completely silent. A few of those words returned this year with the regression ending (praise the Lord) but “Dad” was never one of them.

She had said “ddddaaaa” in January of this year but not much came after that. Fast forward to the end of this month, and now when we ask her to say it on command - she seemingly is doing just that 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Absolutely blown away. I swear she’s even saying, “eeeee” at the end a few times as if to say “daddy”!

We were told Colly would never verbally communicate amongst so many other heartbreaking (and a slew of other WAY MORE terrifying) things that accompany this disease. Honestly, verbally talking fell off of our wishlist a long time ago because we’ve seen her face many other struggles that make every day life so much more challenging for her. My hope has been renewed lately and I’m adding it back onto my dreams for her. 💫☁️ I know she will likely never verbally speak in sentences, but to have a few words would be incredible and I’m sure would do wonders for her anxiety and frustration levels as well.

So much can change in one year 🥹❤️‍🔥 So much can change in one year 🥹❤️‍🔥

In June 2023, we were 7 months into a devastating diagnosis - which would be Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disease that is a whole body disorder and affects every single thing the body does for us voluntarily. We were told Colly may never walk, she would face severe motor challenges, have so many limitations of her life, and worst of all, a shortened life span. She was also in the midst of her Rett Regression, which is where children rapidly lose any acquired skills they DO have (basic things - like using their hands and swallowing food). It also causes so many issues with mood, breathing, sleep, and much, much more. The only way to put it is non stop suffering, and absolutely gut wrenching.

One year later and I think we can say Colly is out of her regression and new skills are emerging. In June of 2023, she was just learning to tolerate more time standing up and attempting assisted steps with a walker and bearing weight on her feet. Her mood has improved so much by gaining this independence of walking where she wants and she seems so much more stable.

“Believing gets hard, when options are few” has never felt so real in my life. I am pretty sure I was circling the drain and at the bottom of the bottom in June 2023. Life was so hard, DEPRESSING, scary, and uncertain. I refuse to give up on God though, because He doesn’t give up on me. While we know Rett is a savage beast, we are believing Colly will continue to defy the odds and she WILL keep surprising us 🥹💫 If you asked me last year if she’d be walking next June, I’d probably try to sound hopeful but I would tell you it was maybe *hopefully* going to still happen in a year or two. AND LOOK AT HER GO!!

If you are in your circling moment, just hang on. Miracles happen every day, EVEN IF it’s not in the way you or I pray about. I know the author of Colly’s story is STILL writing a beautiful one, so I’m going to trust and hold onto that.

With today being #rarediseaseday, it felt very rig With today being #rarediseaseday, it felt very right to share this now. In the beginning of January, we had the opportunity to discuss one of the first pediatric gene therapy trials for Rett Syndrome happening NOW in the USA!! It is a very exciting time and we are cautiously optimistic about our daughter, Colly, having the chance to receive this life saving treatment.

We were also so thankful to chat about our fundraiser with @picazzositalian which donates $1 of every chocolate chip cookie dessert sold to @rsrtig (which is the only foundation solely dedicated to the cure) and how raise awareness about how this devastating disease has impacted our sweet girl and so many others who are suffering from it.

We need this cure!! Without it, Colly will continue to struggle for life’s basic necessities - BREATHING, eating, sleeping, walking, talking and using her hands. Rett is a severe neurological disease that affects every aspect of her life, everything our brain tells our bodies to do for us is disrupted for a girl with Rett Syndrome.

Full video is in the link in my bio if you’d like to watch more! BIG thank you to @elainavpr for facilitating this for us, and to @arizonasfamily for allowing us to share 🤍

My kids’ birthdays have ALWAYS been emotional fo My kids’ birthdays have ALWAYS been emotional for me. I cry every year on the day that they turn a year older. That reality hits so much harder with Colly, and the fragility of her life. The “bittersweet” of a new year: what it symbolizes and how time moves on for others, but it really doesn’t for Colly. I’m really trying to still be grateful, even through all of the hard. I just wish things were easier for her. I have to keep trusting that God’s plan is so much bigger and better than mine.

I love you, my angel, Sweetpea Girl 💗 Happy 3rd Birthday.
