Disney's in the Desert

June 2022 Recap

July 11, 2022

More than a full week into July now and I figured it was time to get this up! I’m going to try and keep this one really short and sweet because I am planning on blogging about our Disneyland and San Diego trip which took up some of June for us!

Kids

Our kids’ school isn’t year round, but since they have so many week long breaks, half days, and other random days off, their summer break is really only 60 days! They’re released the last couple days of May – have all of June and July and then start school Aug 1! Therefore we really try and soak up the full months of these two J months before it’s back to the school grind!

Conner went to camp with our church for 5 days (the first time away from C and I like that EVER! He had the best time though and made tons of memories), we played glow in the dark mini golf, found a few new spots to eat, made homemade mozzarella sticks and onion rings for dinner, Colly experienced the beach for the first time ever, and enjoyed the monsoons! Conner also started basketball (which he’s super passionate about the game right now!) and it’s been fun to watch. The boys have been helping in the yard and it’s been a big help to have them tidying up – especially when the birds and the elements love to go hard on everything out there. 🥴

Hun got signed up for gymnastics (I’ll share more about this in July, since it officially started this month!) and she’s been super interested in the Paint by Stickers books.

Colly still isn’t walking (she turned 17 months in June). I took her to our pediatrician under the impression I would be able to get a referral to PT for her, but he said I shouldn’t be super concerned as of yet. We’re going to check in again August when she’s 19 mo to assess her then. If she’s still not standing or walking, we will go from there and make those appts, but as of right now he thinks she’s just being stubborn. The boys both walked by 12 mo (or even a little earlier for first steps) but Hun didn’t start walking until 15-16 months. However, with Honey, she was standing and Colly is not, so that’s where a lot of my concern stemmed from. I am going by what our ped is saying and recommending, so my nerves are a little more calm about it. He said she is super strong, does not have low tone, and has a strong core so hopefully there won’t be many more delays as far as her getting going with it! I’ll definitely keep you guys posted on what happens in the future with it.

Me

I shared an update on IG two weeks ago about how I’m trying to figure out the best way to deliver content to you all while not burning out entirely. Last summer was my first summer with 4 kids at home and while they were all a whole year younger, it didn’t feel as hectic this one does. I love being consistent and knowing each week I have Mon-Wed content already planned out and that you can count on (Monday’s are always favorite finds or a hack, Tuesdays are always style inspired, and Wednesdays are always new recipes!) but I was definitely kind of hitting a wall. Between juggling everything and the kids home and needing more, I was having a hard time and feeling super overwhelmed. I also shared last month that I’ve been dealing with some health things on top of this busy season, but I just got some amazing news from my doctor and have a plan to get things back under control. I am SO excited and relieved, I can’t even begin to explain – which I will, but that will have to be in another post too!

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading and keeping up with us and all of your support. I say it often (cuz it’s TRUE!) but I really do have the best community here.

Hope the rest of your month goes smoothly and you’re able to enjoy the summer, too!

May 2022 Recap

June 4, 2022

If you’re new, welcome!! This is where at the beginning of each month I recap the previous month for our family and what we were up to!

Oh Em Gee – that went in a blink 😳. What’s new though, right? I feel like time is moving at warp-speed!

The Girls

We had our very first ‘tea’ party that I’ll be sharing here soon. I suppose it’s not something super interesting, but for me (and Hun!) it was really special and something I definitely plan to do regularly. Colly was still a bit too young, but Hun had the best time. I feel like tea parties are something I really wish I did more of growing up so it’s sweet to introduce it to my girls and have it be one of our little ‘things’ as they get older.

Honey also graduated from Pre-K – I am still in disbelief. Ready or not (she’s ready, Mama isn’t!), Kindergarten here she comes in August!!! Her Pre-K graduation was the cutest thing; she knew all of the songs, gestures, and moves for their performances and it brought me back to watching Conner’s 5 years ago. Time sure does fly! (Cole didn’t have a Pre-K grad due to COVID) so this was really amazing to be here in person to see Hun do hers!

Colly got into the pool this month for the first time ever! I’m not sure why, but even with my mom living down the street and a pool in her backyard that the other 3 kid are always in, she didn’t make it in last year. This is her year though! She had so much fun and loved it – a true water baby just like her siblings!

Colly in her Mambobaby Float!

The Boys

Both boys finished out the school year ridiculously strong, and we are SO proud! Conner scored above mastery in the AASA tests he needed to pass to go on to 4th grade, which was huge. We had hired a tutor for him back in Feb and sports took a backseat so that he could prepare for this and we’re so thrilled to see all of his hard work pay off. Cole was awarded “Class Comedian” (who’s shocked?!🤣) and had high marks to finish the year as well. He brought home his school journal and it gave us several laughs as well… #thiskid 🤣

Back in Feb he did a journal entry on a trip to Flagstaff where he ‘ate a can of Pringles’

Our boys are officially off to 4th grade and 2nd grade…..pleeeeeeease time, slow down!! They are ready for summer though and to have some down time from studying! I know they’re mostly looking forward to enjoying the pool and get back into sports! A few weeks ago we actually got them enrolled into BJJ but there’s a little bit of a wait list, so they did the trial to see if they liked it (which they did!) and now are just waiting to get signed up officially. Conner will also be playing basketball and Cole is signed up for soccer. Conner is also attending camp with our church for the first time and it’s a really big deal! I have never been away from him for that long, or in that capacity, but I know he will have the best experience and I’m really excited for him.

Home

I know I am behind on sharing our room refreshes, but I promise, they’re coming! I just need some time to photograph the spaces, edit pics, and of course, write up and get the sources to everything for you guys. What’s still in the works to share here over the summer through the remaining year for our house updates: laundry room, living room (very small, minimal changes that have made this room so much happier! In fact, it’s now called ‘The Happy Room’ because every. single. time. Colly goes into it, she giggles!), main family room, the loft, the DIY spice rack/organization I added to our pantry.

I actually just finished my first DIY wallpapering job on my own – C usually does all of the installs even when it comes to wallpaper in our house, but I did this weird angled wall that goes up our stairway ALLLLLL on my own this last month. It did take me several days (had to take a few breaks, haha) and I def have a new respect for this stuff. C is so good at it he makes it look easy, but even with walls that aren’t angled it’s a little tricky because walls are usually not even/level after the foundation settles and whatnot. The one I did also had grooves because of the stairs/steps and I wasn’t really easy for me to piece together and figure out, but hey, I got it done! I think it looks pretty good! Def not perfect, but I’m happy with it!

ALSO we are hoping to replace our carpet with vinyl flooring and new carpet as the summer goes on too! So, lot’s of things still underway at the Disney house but I am hopeful to share the finished spaces ASAP!

With our whole crew at Floor & Decor

We said goodbye to our 8 foot farmhouse dining room table that C built for our family in 2016 because we were wanting to downsize a little. As much as that table has been wonderful to have and enjoy, it took up so much space and our dining room isn’t very big. I went back and forth on listing it because I definitely had a bunch of sentimental attachment to it as C built it right after my miscarriage in 2016, and in a way, it kind of got us through a really difficult time. I still remember the night we moved it into our dining room from the garage when it was completed. It felt like a fresh start for us. Anyway, as soon as I listed it on FB Marketplace, I received a message from the sweetest mom who wanted it for her family of 5. It was easier to let go of it knowing it was going to such a loving home!!!

2016 when the boys were SO little and we moved in our new table C built from the garage

Originally our plan was to replace the farmhouse table with another that C was building. He had gotten a table top and was working on sanding it down, and also was able to pick up some pretty cool legs for it that he would assemble and most likely paint. In the mean time, we found a table we absolutely loved at World Market and is has some similarities to our old table (with the bench) but has a live edge, is smaller (yay!), and a little lighter in color. We grabbed it a couple days after Cole was out of the hospital and got it built and we’ve been enjoying it since! I haven’t shared it on IG yet, so blog friends, you’re seeing it first! 😍 We plan to sell the table that C started working on to replace our old still, so if you’re local and interested, stick around! I’ll probably post on my stories when it’s ready 😊

Our new dining table!

ME!

SO, I do have a whole blog post planned to answer Q&A and my experience, but at the beginning of May I scheduled my LASIK procedure and am beyond thrilled to share that I now have 20/20 vision!!!!!! As someone who has struggled to see almost their entire life (24 years + legally blind), this always felt like a pipe dream and something I wasn’t sure would ever happen. Now that it has, it TRULY feels surreal – almost like I’m dreaming and waiting to wake up. IT’S ALREADY THAT LIFE CHANGING! I wanted to wait until the 1 to 2 month mark to share more as my eyes adjust, so look out for this post probably in late June or July! I’m so freaking thankful this became a reality for me. I also really love being able to protect my eyes in the sun (I haven’t had prescription sunglasses and with wearing glasses full time, I wasn’t able to wear sunglasses!)

What’s To Come

I took both of these pics of the girls on my Canon at two different times and I just love how similar, yet different they look from each other. Such expressive girls!

We are planning our first big trip out of the state this summer, along with celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary in less than a month, Honey’s 5th birthday, and hopefully a hiking/nature trip to Flag before the kids start school in August.

I’m really going to try hard to stick to our weekly posting schedule here: Monday is Mom Mondays (Mom Hacks, Mom Finds/Faves), Tuesday is Try It Tuesday (fashion/style for moms + kids), Wednesday is We Eat Wednesday (brand new to the blog EASY recipes that our family loves!), and Thursday I’m trying out a new installment called That’s Interesting Thursday where I share a product, how to, or just something random that I find to be interesting/helpful!! Since being able to put my small shop on hold since January, I’ve been able to focus on the blog and content creation FULL TIME and it’s been great. I still work part time for my husband doing some admin tasks and social media for his business, but I no longer run into the massive delays I was having getting posts up due to juggling so many things (my shop taking up the most/draining my battery super quickly). That said, I’m still a mom with four small kids, so delays do happen – but I’m trying to be better with consistent content and I’m excited to ramp it up even more (so many ideas to share!)

Here’s to a new, great month and the first month of SUMMER!

Try It Tuesday: Baby/Toddler OOTD

May 24, 2022

Dressing my kids has been a favorite past time for me over the last decade, that’s no secret by now. The boys still oblige and since I’m the one buying their clothes, they really don’t have much of a choice. I do, however, get their input and try to grab things I know that interest them or are comfortable. Colly has no say so (yet!) and since she’s my last, I’m not passing up things I loved putting both her sister + brothers in. My point is, baby/toddler clothes are just too much fun and I love styling them up!!

I actually grabbed this little outfit (from my latest reel) before the holidays, and Colly Girl is finally fitting into it!

I’m going to include a couple more baby round ups of new items that were just released for summer. You can shop them below!

Soooo cute, huh?!! Colly is now officially a toddler but can still fit in some of the clothes labeled “infant” if they go up to 18-24/24mo. I will link some other finds that go into the extended toddler sizes. I know there are a lot of toddler mamas who read here!

SHOP HERE

We’ve owned a few of the above over the last couple of summers for Hun – I love the little sets. Easy + no fuss for summer!

Hope you enjoyed this week’s installment of #TryItTuesday and found a couple of pieces that you like!

What an incredible opportunity to go (live!!!!) on What an incredible opportunity to go (live!!!!) on @arizonasfamily yesterday! 🎥✨

We were able to share some of Colly’s story along with our fundraiser with @picazzositalian that’s supporting Colly’s pediatric therapy clinic, @bloomkidz_az 💚 In April, $1 of every dessert sold at all 6 stores is being donated here. We are so grateful to be able to give back to such an incredible organization that’s been monumental in Colly’s progress and unwavering in support to our family the last 2.5 years.

Thank you to @cerretanews for taking the time to chat with us and to @elainavpr for always advocating for our family so generously and in such a special way!! 🤍

Colly works so hard 🙏🏻 At age 4 and by this Colly works so hard 🙏🏻
At age 4 and by this stage of this savage disease, eating by mouth (chewing and swallowing) plus gaining (and even maintaining) weight is extremely difficult. Additionally, most girls cannot use their hands for anything with purpose at this time as well 💔

Please join us in praying that Colly will continue to have hand strength + the ability to use them, that she can tolerate eating by mouth, that she stays seizure AND med free, and that she continues to grow and gain weight. Thank you friends!!! 🫶🏻 Forever grateful for this community who encourages and cares about us.

Just received this video from Colly’s PT 2 days Just received this video from Colly’s PT 2 days ago and have already watched it on repeat about 100x 🥹 The squeal of joy is something we don’t take for granted when much of her short life has been consumed with crying, anxiety, pain, and frustration. She genuinely seems so happy and joyful 🥹😭

Also can we also just take a second to acknowledge how much motor planning and brain power it takes to repetitively jump up and down like this?! THAT’S OUR GIRL!!!!! 💪🏻🧠✨

We believe in the power of prayer and humbly ask everyone reading this to please keep praying for her. I will always desperately want more for her, and I am believing in His perfect timing that it will happen.

This is long, but worth a watch!! Colly has been a This is long, but worth a watch!! Colly has been absolutely CRUSHING Rett Syndrome this past month. Literally saying, “Rett who?!?!” 🤯🤗👊🏻 November we witnessed so many miracles happening for Colly. It wasn’t without some bumps, but we have SO much to be thankful for.

By age 3.5 (she’s so close to 4 now!), most girls with this disease no longer have purposeful use of their hands. Every day she’s able to still use them in any capacity is a miracle, but the fact that she’s doing even more beyond that…is almost unbelievable. 🥹 She is not doing what medical text says she should at this stage of the disease.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without her massive team at @bloomkidz_az where she receives 5 different therapies M-F full time, and the last couple of months adding in weekly appointments with @dr.connerbor. The impact all of these treatments are having on her is huge, and at this point, essential to her development and continued progress.

It’s so exciting to be able to post happy + encouraging updates about Colly after so much darkness, sadness, and confusion. Please pray we are able to keep her on this stable track of good health, pray for her team to have the wisdom they need to continue to help her, and pray for even more strength for her body and brain! 💪🏻🧠✨ We can’t thank you enough for cheering our family on as our sweet little girl continues the fight of her life.
The most healing Halloween + diagnosis day yet 🕊️

It’s not a secret that I still carry a heavy grief over Colly’s life. Ultimately, the prognosis of Rett is very dark but seeing her progress since she was diagnosed is nothing short of inspiring. We have so much hope for her future and although there is still much uncertainty, she has an amazing team of therapists, doctors, and supporters. She has treatment plans and goals. She has a family who loves her and will never stop pushing for more for her.

I was telling a friend recently that this day will always be a reminder of the ending of the dreams/life I saw for her, but how can I wallow in sadness when there is so much joy? Colly IS that joy ✨🪽

God has revealed a lot to me these last two years and has pulled me out of a really scary pit. He’s wiped my tears, softened my heart, and given me strength to be a better mom, caregiver, and person for Colly + my other children. Instead of dread, my excitement for life is returning and I can’t wait to see where we’ll be next Halloween 🤍

Finally sharing the small update I did earlier thi Finally sharing the small update I did earlier this year in Colly Girl’s room! I used a wall stencil from Amazon + the colors are Snowbound and Warming Peach by @sherwinwilliams for the paint 🤩

I’m personally obsessed with how it came out!! More details on my blog tonight (link in bio)! ☀️🧡🧸☁️
We are beside ourselves and elated 😭😭 If you We are beside ourselves and elated 😭😭 If you are new here, Colly had a handful of words before her second “Rett Regression” in 2023 where she lost them all and went completely silent. A few of those words returned this year with the regression ending (praise the Lord) but “Dad” was never one of them.

She had said “ddddaaaa” in January of this year but not much came after that. Fast forward to the end of this month, and now when we ask her to say it on command - she seemingly is doing just that 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Absolutely blown away. I swear she’s even saying, “eeeee” at the end a few times as if to say “daddy”!

We were told Colly would never verbally communicate amongst so many other heartbreaking (and a slew of other WAY MORE terrifying) things that accompany this disease. Honestly, verbally talking fell off of our wishlist a long time ago because we’ve seen her face many other struggles that make every day life so much more challenging for her. My hope has been renewed lately and I’m adding it back onto my dreams for her. 💫☁️ I know she will likely never verbally speak in sentences, but to have a few words would be incredible and I’m sure would do wonders for her anxiety and frustration levels as well.

So much can change in one year 🥹❤️‍🔥 So much can change in one year 🥹❤️‍🔥

In June 2023, we were 7 months into a devastating diagnosis - which would be Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disease that is a whole body disorder and affects every single thing the body does for us voluntarily. We were told Colly may never walk, she would face severe motor challenges, have so many limitations of her life, and worst of all, a shortened life span. She was also in the midst of her Rett Regression, which is where children rapidly lose any acquired skills they DO have (basic things - like using their hands and swallowing food). It also causes so many issues with mood, breathing, sleep, and much, much more. The only way to put it is non stop suffering, and absolutely gut wrenching.

One year later and I think we can say Colly is out of her regression and new skills are emerging. In June of 2023, she was just learning to tolerate more time standing up and attempting assisted steps with a walker and bearing weight on her feet. Her mood has improved so much by gaining this independence of walking where she wants and she seems so much more stable.

“Believing gets hard, when options are few” has never felt so real in my life. I am pretty sure I was circling the drain and at the bottom of the bottom in June 2023. Life was so hard, DEPRESSING, scary, and uncertain. I refuse to give up on God though, because He doesn’t give up on me. While we know Rett is a savage beast, we are believing Colly will continue to defy the odds and she WILL keep surprising us 🥹💫 If you asked me last year if she’d be walking next June, I’d probably try to sound hopeful but I would tell you it was maybe *hopefully* going to still happen in a year or two. AND LOOK AT HER GO!!

If you are in your circling moment, just hang on. Miracles happen every day, EVEN IF it’s not in the way you or I pray about. I know the author of Colly’s story is STILL writing a beautiful one, so I’m going to trust and hold onto that.

With today being #rarediseaseday, it felt very rig With today being #rarediseaseday, it felt very right to share this now. In the beginning of January, we had the opportunity to discuss one of the first pediatric gene therapy trials for Rett Syndrome happening NOW in the USA!! It is a very exciting time and we are cautiously optimistic about our daughter, Colly, having the chance to receive this life saving treatment.

We were also so thankful to chat about our fundraiser with @picazzositalian which donates $1 of every chocolate chip cookie dessert sold to @rsrtig (which is the only foundation solely dedicated to the cure) and how raise awareness about how this devastating disease has impacted our sweet girl and so many others who are suffering from it.

We need this cure!! Without it, Colly will continue to struggle for life’s basic necessities - BREATHING, eating, sleeping, walking, talking and using her hands. Rett is a severe neurological disease that affects every aspect of her life, everything our brain tells our bodies to do for us is disrupted for a girl with Rett Syndrome.

Full video is in the link in my bio if you’d like to watch more! BIG thank you to @elainavpr for facilitating this for us, and to @arizonasfamily for allowing us to share 🤍

My kids’ birthdays have ALWAYS been emotional fo My kids’ birthdays have ALWAYS been emotional for me. I cry every year on the day that they turn a year older. That reality hits so much harder with Colly, and the fragility of her life. The “bittersweet” of a new year: what it symbolizes and how time moves on for others, but it really doesn’t for Colly. I’m really trying to still be grateful, even through all of the hard. I just wish things were easier for her. I have to keep trusting that God’s plan is so much bigger and better than mine.

I love you, my angel, Sweetpea Girl 💗 Happy 3rd Birthday.
