After a very dark season in my life, I knew it was time to reclaim my bedroom as a space of light, calm, and healing. When our daughter was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, my primary bedroom became my retreat for tears and quiet moments. I often kept the curtains closed, and the space felt heavy—literally and emotionally.
Today, I’m in a different chapter. I’ve been working through my grief, and I wanted my bedroom to reflect that journey—a sanctuary where natural light, earthy textures, and organic elements could bring peace back into my life.
The Vision
I wanted the refresh to feel earthy and organic with a touch of modern simplicity. Soft natural tones, warm wood, clean lines, and calming textures came together to create this look. I actually had started this journey prior to the sad period I mentioned above, but it was halted when my life did a complete 180. I had so many ideas and some were about half executed, so I was ready to pick up where I left off!

I started with a neutral palette that would let natural light take the spotlight. The first thing I did that had nothing to do with design or decor per se, was opening the curtains every morning, letting in that desert sunshine. It felt symbolic—welcoming brightness into this space again. For so many months this room was so dark and rarely did I let in the light. I wanted darkness because of what I was going through. Healing day by day, I knew I needed to let the light in again.
The Details That Bring It to Life
The furniture and decor pieces each had to feel intentional, grounding the room in comfort and simplicity.

• The Bed & Bedding – This bed became the anchor of the room, with soft, cozy bedding that layers different textures. One of the biggest pieces of furniture in any bedroom usually – and the whole reason the room exists! We had a beautiful bed that we got about 10 years ago and it definitely served us well over this time, but it was time for something new. I also felt like I held so much of my sadness and negative emotions in that bed for the months following Colly’s diagnosis, so it was definitely time to change it out. I found this one on a Black Friday deal last Christmas, and I am seriously so impressed. Even not on sale, it was a steal!!!! It definitely went above my expectations for it being just a platform bed on Amazon. The bed would not be what it is without our comforter system from Beddy’s! Right now, they have upped my link, just for my audience to 25% off!
I also added some accent pillows with a pop of burnt orange and an interesting abstract lumbar pillow. To finish it off, I added one of Lola Blanket’s new XL blankets! The coziness is absolutely off the charts and I’m obsessed.
• The Dresser – A black, fluted wood dresser adds depth and an earthy element to the room. I do wish this dresser was a tad bigger or had a few more drawers, but with the price point being lower, it’s expected. This is not my ‘forever’ dresser, and maybe one day when we move I’ll get something a little sturdier and larger.
• Lamps & Lighting – Soft, diffused light makes the room feel restful at any time of day. I have a couple of floating geometric lights above our nightstand and a small fluted lamp on the side table by the boucle chair.
• Mirrors – A full length mirror that sits in the corner along with a dresser top mirror (this was an investment piece, but it is stunning!)
I also wanted a hint of personality without it feeling busy, so I added:
- Wall Color: Crushed Ice by Sherwin Williams
- Wall behind bed: Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams
- Subtle Wallpaper Accent: Herringbone
Bringing Light & Calm Into the Space
The most important part of this refresh was transforming the brightness and comfort vibe of the room. I really wanted it to feel like my safe space and sanctuary again. Prior to Colly’s diagnosis, we had started to work on this space. That was all stopped and it was quickly neglected in the months following. Since working on myself and the healing process, I wanted to pick back up and finish what I had started. I wanted a calm, tranquil feeling so I was intentional on the decor pieces and colors.

I kept décor minimal—plants, soft throws, and a few personal touches—so the room would always feel open and uncluttered.
These beautiful (and quite large!) nightstands are also new to this space. I love the fluted detail and deep drawers – there’s three! Having three drawers is such a nice thing for someone like me who has a lot of pajamas 🙂 I also like to keep additional clothing like skirts and lounge pants in them as well, which there is plenty of room to do!

There are a few things I added to the room to make it practical and bring an added ease to my life. Some may call it boujee but these curtain openers by SwitchBot are truly a game changer! Every morning they automatically open at 7am and close at 6pm. I also added one of my fave home hacks to this area too- a remote control outlet plug to easily turn on and off the pendant lights above our nightstands. To reduce cords and clutter, I love these cord holders by my bed too!

Every piece I brought in feels like it has a purpose, reflecting calm, warmth, and renewal. I still wanted a little work space, so I brought in this earthy/neutral desk where our laptops can stay with currently reading books and fave photos of our kids. I added a touch of warmth with black accents.
The Healing Impact
This refresh wasn’t just about furniture or décor—it was about creating a space where I could feel safe and whole again. When I walk into this room now, it feels like a hug—soft, cozy, and full of life. I wanted a comfy corner nook, so I added this boucle swivel chair and a small side table with a fluted lamp. The perfect spot to read a book, decompress, snuggle up with one of my four kids, or simply put my shoes on in the morning.

If you’ve been here for a while, you know we have a FrameTV downstairs in our main family room. I love this TV so much (the quality is great but the aesthetic is even better!) The best part of it is that it looks like a beautiful piece of artwork when the TV is off/in idle mode. I knew I wanted to add one of these to our room, however, the pricetag is hefty. I found The NextFrame TV which is a fraction of the price (and it comes with the teakwood frame/bezel that the FrameTV makes you buy separate!). It had good reviews and essentially does the same exact thing as The Frame, so I added one to our space!

This black boucle ottoman is also something I just added within the last 2 months. I love it for the deep storage aspect it has, but it also brings a pop of black to match the black accent wall against our bed. The natural light fixture is actual multi-purpose, as it’s actually a light and a fan!

This room has become my safe haven again—a place where I can exhale. My bedroom refresh isn’t just a makeover; it’s a reflection of healing, hope, and letting the light back in. Every night I can unwind and my nervous system feels calm as I end my day. Each morning I wake up and feel as rejuvenated (as I can be as a busy mom of 4) looking around at this serene place I’ve created!
Hope you enjoyed a little look at this space!!
