I’ve talked about this on my IG more recently I remember when gallery walls were “IT” and something that you saw alllllll over Pinterest. Times change and decor is forever evolving too, and it seems like you see less and less of them these days.
In all honesty, I am kinda digging more of the ‘minimalist’ vibes that are in right now (less is more!), but I still love the gallery walls we have in our home and I don’t intend to take them down. Switching them out for things that match more of my style (I talk more about this in my tips below) helps me fall in love with them all over again. In our loft, we’ve added in pops of blush to go along with the theme of the room and I was able to add in decor pieces to this wall without much fuss. My favorite frames in both walls are included (I LOVE them for pictures of family, the kids, etc) are the ones I have all over my home – literally in every room! They’re from Target and I’ll link them here.
The wall (below) in between the kids bedrooms of the 12 black frames going 4 across is more new (within the last 3 years) and I add the kids school pictures along with some family pictures. I love this one because it shows updates of growth while still keeping older pictures for memories.
C does the hanging, but I always have the vision of what should be incorporated to begin with. I know what I like and I’m thankful to have a husband who puts up with my shenanigans and understands it makes me happy. He has a great eye for home design too so he will give input when necessary.
We recently added in a gallery wall to our master with the kids’ ultrasound photos and the first ever pic of their Daddy holding them in the hospital. I plan to share how I framed the ultrasound pics soon. I had framed the photos for C of him with them but wasn’t sure where to put them in our home. He was the one who actually had the idea of putting the photos underneath the ultrasound frames, and I thought it was so unique and special!!
I’m often sharing spaces in my home, and a recent tour of a room we’re sprucing up lead to many questions about an already existing gallery wall that’s in there. The biggest questions were “how do I do this/get started, and how do you decide what goes where?” It got me thinking, so I wanted to share 5 simple tips that I’ve used over the years when creating a gallery wall in my home.
- Lay everything out on the floor first. We always do this before nailing anything so that we can rearrange it how we want and really see the vision before adding a hole to the wall. Thank me later on this one 😂😭
- Add different sized frames with different textures. There are so many cute options these days at Target, Walmart, HomeGoods, Marshalls, etc! I really love mixing textured photo frames with wood signs and some with patterns, too. I also think it makes a huge difference when you add frames that come with mats (or you can add them to any frame on your own for about $.50-$1). Even though the frames may be different and a little funky, adding a white mat will bring an element of cohesion to your gallery wall.
- Add in decor pieces that are different but have a similar style/theme to your home (farmhouse, boho, modern, etc). This breaks up look so that you’re not staring at a bunch of frames/photos that can all seem to blend together or be too much to look at. You could even DIY some of your own to add to this (the “D” we have on our big wall in the living room was something I picked up at a craft store and painted). Sometimes adding a garland draped over a frame adds texture to a plain frame or wood sign and gives it a little more oomph!
- Don’t have everything going in all of the same landscape. Make sure you a mix of horizontal and vertical frames so it doesn’t get boring to look too blended together.
- Space out each frame or decor piece about 4-8 inches apart. This gives you some wiggle room when you want to change out an item out. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve switched out a frame or added in a new piece of wall art. My style has changed and transformed a lot over the last (almost) 7 years since we purchased our home, and having this space in between each item has allowed me to squeeze in something new here and there without putting a new hole in the wall.
Hopefully this will help someone out there with their next gallery wall! I LOVE home decor and when you guys share with me your home updates/arrangements so feel free to share yours in the comments!!!
